I’ve been following Abraham Hicks’ teachings for three simple reasons:
- It makes sense to me.
- Applying the teachings keeps delighting me, proving over and over just how powerful the law of attraction is.
- Frankly, it’s easy to incorporate into my daily life!
One of my favorite practices from their teachings is called pivoting. Pivoting is all about shifting your attention in real time from a thought or situation that feels less than good to something that feels better. It’s simple, practical, and oh-so-effective.
Recently, I had the perfect opportunity to put pivoting to the test.
The Day Everything Seemed to Go Wrong
It started with me turning down an invitation to a jam session. I felt I should focus on my to-do list and “handle business” instead of playing hooky. But as the day unfolded, life threw curveballs.
- My cleaning provider (for my Airbnb) went MIA.
- A friend sent me money via Zelle, but it didn’t appear in my account.
- I spent 32 frustrating minutes on hold with my bank (from Belize, where calls cost $0.25 per minute).
- Then, in a moment of pure frustration, I stubbed my baby toe so hard it felt broken.
By this point, I was at my wit’s end. My to-do list was untouched, and I was spiraling into a pit of frustration. Then, out of nowhere, a voice inside me said, “Stop everything and hang up the phone now.”
My inner guidance system was loud and clear: “If you keep this up, it’s only going to get worse.”
Remembering the Pivot
That’s when I remembered the pivot.
I knew I had to shift my focus—right then and there. Continuing to push against what wasn’t working wasn’t helping. So, I made a choice. If my “responsible” to-do list was falling apart, I might as well do something that actually felt good.
I decided to go to the jam session I’d turned down earlier. I brought along my Washboard (yes, I play the Washboard—Louisiana roots and all!) and joined in the music.
Within minutes, the stress melted away. I couldn’t help but smile as I tapped along and played to my heart’s content. The joy of the music was contagious, and it worked its magic on my mood.
The Law of Attraction in Action
As I walked home along the beach, I noticed something remarkable:
- My baby toe no longer hurt.
- I checked my bank account, and the missing money had appeared.
- I still hadn’t heard from my cleaning provider—but at that point, I didn’t even care.
This experience was a clear reminder of how we get more of what we focus on. When I was focused on frustration, more frustrating things kept happening. But the moment I shifted my focus to something fun and uplifting, everything else started to work itself out.
Washing Away the Boogie Man
Next time your vibe is down, try this:
- Stop.
- Ask yourself how you can “wash away the boogie man” and clean up your vibe.
- Do something—or think something—that feels even slightly better than the negative spiral you’re in.
You don’t need a washboard to pivot. Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking a walk, watching a funny video, or playing your favorite song. It’s all about finding the next best feeling and letting that lead the way.
Here’s me that day, washboard in hand, playing away the blues:
